Scam alert with custom guitars!

Alright, let's broach an uncomfortable topic: scammers. Like with any other opportunity for money and goods exchange there are many people out there who have fallen victim to scammers either posing as guitar builders or simply engaging in unethical business practices. You can find several examples of this with a fairly cursory internet search. The topic has come up several times on the r/Luthier sub-Reddit, for example. This brings up a justifiable question: how do you ensure someone you might be paying a few thousand dollars for a custom build is legitimate?

First things first, before engaging any custom builder (definitely before paying any money), do some basic due diligence on them. This would include looking for negative reviews, forum discussions, and basic things like is contact information (electronic and physical) readily available? Can you find their name? Can you ask for a phone call or, if local, a shop visit? For Dunham Guitars, this information about me (Marc Dunham) is all available on this website. You are also welcome to check out my professional profile on LinkedIn, which includes my professional history as a scientist/engineer. You should always feel comfortable with the availability of information on the builder/seller before any transactions occur.

What about the payment method itself? Be wary of sellers insisting on methods that seem intended to avoid traceability (cash) or consumer protection (Venmo or PayPal payment marked as "transfer to a friend"). Currently my preferred platform is PayPal, and any transactions will be recorded as a purchase with a receipt. This gives both parties protection mechanisms and peace of mind that everyone is due to get what they signed up for.

The stories of these scammer events are really depressing, and not only because of the amount of money, but also because a purchase like this is and should be a really personal and significant transaction. There are some scammers out there who become quite good at what they do, so make sure you are following basic personal protections during your build process. Above all, trust your instincts. If something doesn't feel right, let it be.

Happy shredding,

Marc
